How to read this comparison
The study mean is an anchor, not a cut-off. In Woods et al. (2015) the calibrated simple visual reaction time across 1,469 adults was about 213 ms after measured hardware delay was removed, and the observed mean rose gradually from roughly 218 ms in the youngest group to 239 ms in the oldest. Your browser score sits on top of that biology plus your own display, input device, and attention on the day.
Because the test is self-administered in a browser, treat a single number as a session result. Compare complete five-round medians on the same setup before drawing conclusions about change.
Fast, typical, or slower — qualitatively
The comparator groups your difference from the age-group mean into plain-language bands rather than a precise rank:
- Faster than the study mean — below the observed mean for your age group. Encouraging, but still includes display and input latency.
- Close to the study mean — a typical browser result for this protocol and moment.
- A little slower than the study mean — commonly explained by attention, sleep, anticipation control, input device, or display timing.
- Notably slower than the study mean — usually a setup or attention effect; warm up, remove distractions, and retest before reading too much into it.
Why there is no single good number
A good reaction time depends on the task (simple versus choice), the hardware (refresh rate, input latency), the protocol (number of rounds, early-click handling), and the alertness of the person. Two people with identical nervous systems can post different browser scores on different machines. That is why we publish the method and the research anchor instead of a leaderboard.
